Our History

Making a Difference

The December 1985 edition of the Great Circle has a "Twenty Years Ago" article about the founding of GRCTM:

"About 70 persons attended the organizational meeting [on November 7, 1965] and voted to establish a Constitution Committee, a Nominating Committee, and to request affiliation with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics." The scheduled second meeting was postponed from January to March because of snow. The March meeting "saw the adoption of a constitution establishing the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics as the official name of the new organization. Those elected officers were Lucien Hall (Thomas Jefferson High School), President; John Mairhuber (University of Richmond), Vice President; Ethyl Stone (Virginia Randolph School), Recording Secretary; Barbara Bass (George Wythe High School), Corresponding Secretary; and Sister Mary Paula (St. Joseph's Villa), Treasurer... GRCTM wasted little time in taking on major projects. It issued NCTM an invitation which was  accepted to hold a name-of-site meeting in Richmond in November, 1967. A joint membership campaign was held with NCTM. A newsletter was established, with Isabelle Rucker and Sherman Grable (University of Richmond) serving as co-editors."

Today we continue to make a difference in the Richmond Area, supporting mathematics education through the newsletter, the website, the conferences and the basic sharing of information and ideas.
