Kristine Vester is a Math Hero

Kristen Vester, an Educator at the MathScience Innovation Center, was a recipient of the Raytheon Math Hero Award.  These awards are presented to deserving teachers who promote math to students in a fun and challenging learning environment. Each Math Hero award winner will receive a $2,500 award and a matching grant of $2,500 for his or her school.  To learn more about these awards and grants, visit their site, www.MathMovesU.com. In August 2009, only 30 Math Hero awards were given nationwide, nominated by students, parents and faculty for their enthusiasm and interest in teaching math to others. Way to go, Kris!

Ena Gross Wins Award

On August 19, 2009, Dr. Ena Gross received the Distinguished Teaching Award from Virginia Commonwealth University.  Dr. Gross is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the university. Hats off to our board member and colleague Ena.

Ena has served on our GRCTM Board for a long while and currently chairs the Grants Committee. She has served as President and was the recipient of the Lucien T. Hall Award.

Carrie Persing Wins Presidential Award

On July 9, 2009, the White House announced the 2008 Presidential Awardees for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. President Obama  named more than 100 science, math, and engineering teachers and mentors as recipients of two prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence. One award was for engineering mentors and the other for teachers of math and science. The educators will receive their awards in the Fall at a White House ceremony.The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to the best pre-college-level science and math teachers from across the country. Our own GRCTM Corresponding Secretary, Carrie Persing was named!

Carrie Persing has been teaching mathematics and language arts in elementary and middle schools for 14 years, including six years in high-poverty, high-minority schools. At the time of the award, she was a mathematics specialist for kindergarten through fifth grade at Harrowgate Elementary School in the Chesterfield County School System, and she continues to work with these students through a morning enrichment program. She also cotaught a fourth grade special education class. Ms. Persing is currently a mathematics educator for MathScience Innovation Center, which works with a consortium of districts in central Virginia to provide innovative programs and futuristic topics in both mathematics and science to K-12 educators and students.
