Information about the Award

Each year the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics may recognize an individual for outstanding contributions to the mathematics education profession.  In 1997 the GRCTM Board of Directors renamed the award as the Lucien T. Hall, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in Mathematics Education, in memory of this outstanding mathematics educator and friend.  While serving as mathematics supervisor for the City of Richmond in 1965, Lucien Hall organized the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  He was GRCTM’s first president and creator of the Great Circle, which continues to provide information and inspiration to its readers.

Persons eligible for this award are current members of GRCTM.  The Awards Committee considers the following criteria when selecting the recipient:

• An extended period of exemplary classroom teaching;

• Distinguished service in a supervisory or administrative role;

• Service in a leadership role in GRCTM, VCTM, NCTM;

• Service in a support role in GRCTM or other professional organizations;

• Service through participation on educational committees;

• Participation as a speaker or workshop leader at meetings;

• Service as an instructional leader in school division inservice training;

• Publication in professional journals or newsletters.

Persons wishing to nominate a candidate for the Lucien T. Hall, Jr., Distinguished Service Award in Mathematics Education should submit the nomination form as well as a concise statement outlining the nominee’s teaching ability and service to the mathematical community.  In particular, this statement should address specific accomplishments for which the nomination is being made.
